We went to the Oregon Coast Museum this morning. We got there just after it opened, so we were able to see everything without a lot of competition. Emma touched a few things in the touch pool, but Ben wouldn't have anything to do with it. It didn't help that we'd rented a double stroller and he didn't want to get out of it. A little frustrating, but at least we weren't having to carry him!
There were some really cute areas with activities to do with the kids. I loved all the different play areas. They went fishing, put the fish on the conveyor belt and then took the fish to market. There was a play submarine that they could look through a periscope and push buttons to hear what different whales, fish, etc sound like. The jellyfish display was really cool. They outside exhibits weren't as plentiful. There were seals, sea otters, birds, sea lions, etc. it didn't take us as long as we had hoped to go through it...especially after the cost to get in!
We left before noon and headed down to the wharf to have lunch. We'd heard good things about Mo's, so we went looking. We had about a 15 minute wait, but it was worth it! Both Lennard and I had fish and chips, although Lennard added shrimp and clams to his. I had fresh halibut - so good! Ben had a small order of fish and chips too while Emma opted for mac and cheese instead. The funny thing was half way through the meal, they ended up switching meals and eating everything! At least they ate. They loved that their drinks came with a shark on the straw. Gotta love free souvenirs! We were seated by an open window in the shade with a cool breeze and we hadn't brought the kids jackets with us, so they were freezing. I ended up giving my jacket to Ben, but then I froze too. Crazy.
After lunch we decided to go check out some lighthouses. We went to the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse first that was just minutes from the wharf. It was only in service for three years. It is a very different looking lighthouse, more like a house than the typical tall lighthouse. We were able to do the self guided tour through it. The kids started to get crabby on the way out and we could tell they were tired.
We loaded up and headed down the road to the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. We didn't realize that we would have to pay to get in the the state park where it is located, and then we were informed that all the tours were booked for the day, so we couldn't even go in it. Grrr! Oh well, by that time the kids had fallen asleep and it wasn't worth it to wake them up. We drove up to the lighthouse anyways and after finally finding a parking space, I went out to take some pictures while Lennard stayed with the kids. It is a beautiful area, but so windy!
We then drove back to the trailer to grab a few things and headed down to the beach that we'd gone to yesterday. We woke the kids up when we got there and they were both excited to go play in the sand again. I was better prepared this time and wore my jacket and Lennard's hoodie. I also brought our new beach chairs and a blanket! I got myself settled in and stayed there! The wind is so cold! The kids had fun flying a kite, especially when we didn't have to do anything to get it up in the air or to keep it there. Both kids took a turn and thought it was pretty fun. They played for quite a while and Lennard enjoyed standing out by the water watching the waves come in. After about an hour we packed up and headed back to the trailer for some dinner.
There is a trail right next to our campsite that is quite busy, so I convinced the kids and Lennard to go explore tonight. It was a very sandy trail that ended on a beach with lots of driftwood and rocks for the kids to throw in the water. It is also quite protected from the wind, so it wasn't cold at all! So nice! We didn't stay nearly long enough, but going back up to the trailer for bathroom breaks curtailed the fun. We ended up going over to the playground instead and letting the kids play. They had a lot of fun...and it wore them out a bit too!
We haven't had any wifi reception at our site, so I walked over to the main office tonight to see if I could get our camping app to load so we could plan our next few days. Thankfully it finally worked! Crazy how much we depend on technology.
We load everything up tomorrow morning for another long day of travelling. I would love to stay in this area longer. It's beautiful. I would also love to drive up the coast but that would add a lot of hours on skinny, twisting roads that Lennard isn't excited for. Guess we'll have to save that for another trip.
